Opus 8, Abbot House Concert

By Dunfermline.info - Mon, 24th May 2010

A cappella choir, Opus 8, will be appearing in concert in the Long Gallery at Abbot House on Sunday 20th June.
Founded in 1986 with the aim of enabling like-minded singers to reach a professional standard of singing while
retaining the amateur’s love of singing for its own sake, the choir are very much looking forward to performing in the atmospheric surroundings of Abbot House.

In their time together the eight-piece choir have sung in far flung venues such as Amsterdam on the occasion of their fifteenth anniversary, and Arhus and Alborg in Sweden in Denmark for their twentieth anniversary.

Other notable occasions were performances for the Commonwealth Heads of Government party’s visit to Culross Palace in 1997. The choir also recorded the Scots medieval plainchant for the audio-visual presentation in Dunfermline’s St. Margaret’s Cave.

Their rich repertoire of music comprises music from Medieval Scotland to the present day, with a concentration on the Renaissance and the nineteenth century. It also encompasses madrigals from France, Italy, England and
Spain, especially Monteverdi.

Performances can include anything from special arrangements of traditional Scots songs, early sacred music form Scotland through to 19th and 20thcentury composers such as Brahms, Elgar and Vaughn Williams.

The programme of music they have chosen for their appearance at Abbot House is entitled ‘Songs for a Summer Solstice’ and includes three madrigals from the 16th century, Scots songs in various arrangements both traditional and modern, spirituals and pieces from Elgar and Stanford.

Tickets priced £10 are on sale now at Abbot House on 01383 733266.
